Club Notes – 2nd of October 2017

Mountbellew Golf Club wish to congratulate our Ladies Challenge Cup team, our Ladies Intermediate team and our Ladies Minor Cup team on their performances in Malone Golf Club in Belfast.

Anne Marie Murray our ladies Captain before teeing off to Malone pointed out that our club only has 60 female members and so far it had been a fantastic year to have won 3 District Pennants. Only 30 of our female members are actively playing in weekly competitions. From a supporters point of view, a very large group travelled from Mountbellew for this important event in our club’s history.

On day 1, 27th September our Intermediate team in the All Ireland 1/4 final fought a great fight against Cahir Park but lost on a scoreline of 3.5 to 1.5. All the team of Margaret Harkin, Connie O’Brien, Mary Hyland, Caroline Delaney & Mary Costello played very well. Also on day 1 however, our Minor Cup team beat Headfort on the same scoreline 3.5 to 1.5. Great performances from Katie Coleman, Geraldine Coyne & Patricia Burke who each won their matches helped greatly to get Mountbellew into an Ireland Semi Final. Kathleen Raftery and Rose Devaney were called in.

In the All Ireland semi final of the Minor Cup Mountbellew beat Wexford by 4 and 1. Katie Coleman’s performance was the talk of Malone given she won her match by 8 and 6. Rose Devaney wasn’t to far behind given she also won her match 5 and 4, with Geraldine Coyne winning 3 and 1.

In the All Ireland Challenge Cup Semi Final Mountbellew lost out to Fintona on a scoreline of 4 to 1.

Emma Morrow like Katie Coleman in the Minor Cup match won her match by 8 and 6. Both teenagers have a really great future ahead of them However Fintona won the next 3 matches on the course and hence qualified for the All Ireland Final. Well done to all the team of Bridie Jones, Emma Morrow, Mary Dolan, Bernadette Jordan & Mary Ryan.

In the AIG Minor Cup Final, Mountbellew lost out to Lee Valley by a 4 and 1 scoreline. This did not reflect the closeness of the match with one match finishing on 19th and two matches losing on the 18th hole. A tremendous effort by Kathleen Raftery, Katie Coleman, Geraldine Coyne, Patricia Burke, and Rose Devaney came very close to winning on the day.

The three team Captains of Helen Cunningham, Mary Hyland, and Chrissie Hogan wish to thank all their team members for putting Mountbellew on the MAP. They along with our Club Captain also wish to thank all our supporters for travelling to Malone Golf Club. We also wish to thank everyone who supported by buying raffle tickets, playing in the club scramble, contributed money and supported our barbecue and auction. Our main sponsor for the Barbecue and Auction was Jimmy Screene and Becki Gavin. Without their help our fundraising events would not have been as successful as they were. Thank you EVERYONE.

The club wishes to offer its sincerest sympathies to the family and many friends of Rev. Canon Padraig O’Connor who died on Wednesday 27th September last. Canon Padraig was a member and great supporter of our club. Our thoughts and prayers are with his sister Veronica, Sister Teresa, brothers Sean and Monsignor Albert, nieces, nephews grandnieces and grandnephews, Archbishop Neary and brother priests and religious of the diocese, neighbours and many friends. May He Rest In Peace.
