On Saturday 26th August a very special presentation to Marguerite Hughes was held in the club. Marguerite who recently retired, had served our club loyally for over 28 years. A lot of individuals paid tribute to Mags as she was affectionately known. The Management committee represented by Noel Coen (Chairman), the Ladies committee represented by Anne Marie Murray (Lady Captain) and the Men’s committee represented by Michael Conneally (Men’s Captain) each presented Marguerite with mementos to mark this special occasion. Marguerite thanked all officers and members of the club, “not just the recent crews”, for their help throughout her many years of service.

She also thanked her husband Paddy, and her sister Helen and other family members along with her many friends for making her work at Mountbellew Golf Club so enjoyable. Marguerite also thanked all members for attending on Saturday night. After all the speeches a great night of song and dance was had by all who attended.

Mountbellew Golf Club wishes to congratulate David Kitt on his performance at the Irish Amateur Close Championship in Galway Golf Club during the week 21st to 26th August.

David qualified to play in the event by playing so well at the Boys British Open Championship in Nairn in Scotland. The teenager took full advantage of knowing the Galway layout and reached the final by playing great golf. In the final however David went 3 down after 12 holes against Jamie Fletcher from Warrenpoint, but this didn’t phase the young man. David dug deep and fought back to bring the match down the 18th hole where his pitch for a birdie just missed by a matter if inches and allowed Jamie two putts for the match. The Warrenpoint man was not found wanting.

The loudest cheers were for David who had great support from all over Connaught during the Final. He has a great future ahead of him.

The Club also wishes to Congratulate Adam Challoner who competed in the WEE Wonders Grand Final at St. Andrew’s Royal & Ancient Golf Club. Adam shot 72 on Saturday 26th and 77 on Sunday 27th August to claim 7th position overall. Another great performance by this young man who was recently crowned Connacht Close Under 12 Champion at Loughrea Golf Club. Well done to both young men!!!
